Jamie Jellis: Club Statement

No, but I’d say if you are putting on over 2,000 bets in for years it is at the very least a concern, regardless of what the definition of “addiction” is.

Not necessarily. Most gamblers stick to fields they know about/are interested in, rather than just betting on anything and everything.

I have no idea, but Jellis is the third football player this summer to be charged in incidents where they have placed a staggering number of bets. That seems quite damning.

I think the punishment is going to be decided by If he made a bet on the team he was playing for. If it was just random bets he made on the prem then they might be fairly lenient.

If there’s even a hint of insider betting then it will likely be a big ban.

Because they have a duty of care towards him and just excluding him on the basis of something allegedly did before he joined the club as an employee, and before even being found guilty, wouldn’t be a great look.

As far as I can tell, it’s only an offence if you are betting on games you are involved in, can affect, or have inside info about. If you’re a footballer at any level and able to bet on games at your level then you should know that betting on it is wrong.

Age/naivety is a defence, I agree, but I keep coming back to the volume of bets. It’s years of consistent betting, we can only hope that it’s the lowest grade of offence, i.e 3rd party games maybe at his level or just above.

From someone who has a gambling addiction, I wish Jamie all the very best through this process and his recovery.

I thought it was any football bet that was outlawed, not just games they participate in.

I think the rules are slightly different below a certain level.

Ive gone from looking forward to the season to the depths of despair in about a week.

We have two forwards who are nowhere near professional football league standard, a lightweight (now almost invisible) midfield with this latest shenanigans and im not too convinced about the big guy at the back.

Just over a week until the opening game. Great stuff.

To put it mildly, it does not look good. A possible betting addiction is one thing, and probably no one would care if it was pigeon racing somewhere in South America. However, betting on the number of throws, free kicks, fouls and similar in or around the leagues he was playing in could result in severe punishment. It’s very hard to hide behind your age or naivety in that situation. I hope he gets help to overcome these demons, but for now, football is no longer important for him.

Silly boy!

Feel sorry for him, gambling is an addiction and it swollows people whole. I hope the club stand by him and continue to play him and support him whatever way they can in the background until the charge. Said charge could happen in 2026 looking at other cases, so nothing really should change with his playing situation until January, unless the club have been indicated otherwise.

I’m hoping it was the typical of sticking accas on when he was playing way down the pyramid and nothing involving his own teams or leagues. If so then he probably will get a smack on the wrist and that’s that. I also hope he has been compliant with the FA through the whole thing as that is what really extinuated the case against Ryan Bowman and added more time onto his ban. The fact he seems to have stopped when he got to Tamworth is a good sign as well for his case.

Hes deleted all his instagrams and tweets about walsall

Exactly this.
Even 30 years ago if you didn’t have a betting account you could get fixed odds coupons from the bookies for midweek, Friday and weekend games. Also separate ones for the European leagues including their 2nd divisions.
If you were only placing bets on the results of games it was easy to have 2 or 3 bets on pretty much 5 nights a week. Before considering goal scoring, throw ins and all the random things that have come with internet betting.

It’s amazing but you never hear of any PFA interventions on cases like this. As a professional body I would have thought the PFA would offer support to the player?

Seems a strange reaction. I can understand going off social media to avoid the keyboard warriors but what exactly have the club done wrong that has lead him to erase his involvement with WFC.

Perhaps he feels the club has not supported him enough ? Or does he think someone at the club dropped him in it ?

Or he just deleted everything :person_shrugging:t2:

I would imagine that any help offered would be strictly confidential, and with a tribunal coming up, the player would be strongly advised not to make any public statements at all.

Good luck JJ - Hope he’s getting all the support he needs and the punishment dished out isn’t too severe..

Not on social media at all personally, thank god, but maybe he deleted anything to do with Walsall out of respect or to prevent any ramifications?
Either way I ain’t bothered what he does on there as regards posts etc I’m more bothered that he, or anyone in like situation in life, get the help and guidance needed to get out of this extremely hard ever spiralling trap they find themselves in.
I know ones ‘close’ to me who don’t acknowledge they have a problem, but they have it big big time, always chasing that next win.
All the best JJ I know you can do it and be a better person for it…

Thought I’d have a read over a past case and picked this one, first on an alphabetical list involving a player.

A non-league player but a significantly lower number of bets. The player used lack of knowledge of the betting rules as a mitigating factor in his defence. Outcome was £350 fine and a 9 month ban.

The commission focused on four bets involving the players club, one of which he played in.

I think if JJ has placed a bet involving a club he was at during the time period he will be facing a fine and could get a suspended suspension. If he was involved in games he placed a bet on then I reckon he is looking at a 6 month suspension minimum.

I reckon if I read more there will be contradictions in approach by the FA giving different outcomes, so it could just come down to pure luck :grimacing:
