L 3-2 vs Brighton & Hove Albion U21’s (H) - PJT Group Stage - Tue 22nd Aug, 7pm

That sums up up pretty much exactly how I feel about the situation.
I wish I’d written that

Thought Maher was ok last night but he seems no further on in his development than last year. Needs more minutes with us (unlikely) or a good loan. Not sure if he can still go out on a “youth loan” which may enable him to come back to us to play the other 2 trophy games.

He looks way off first team to me

That is a good summary of the highlights. I would add two things from the entire game. First, it is very encouraging that a team missing around 7 sure league starters could play in a coherent, fluent style. That is the sign of a well-coached squad.

On Maher, he was a mixture of the excellent and the not so good. Obviously, the highlights show the former but it is hard to see him as a starter unless he can improve his reliability. But he is still only 18 so the question is how to ensure he progresses. Surely, a loan is the best.

Agree about DJT. He really should have put the header away but he is far from the passenger that some people seem to see.

I accept that highlights will only show parts of the game. I’m sure Maher has a lot to work on but he clearly has an eye for goal and I wonder whether, as an 18 year old, he could play a part from the bench this season, particularly if we are chasing games and looking to unlock the opposition defence?

I’m pleased with what you say about team cohesion and style. As you say, that suggests the coaching is starting to embed itself within the whole squad.

He went because he is a True supporter and the moaners and groaners don’t go, :joy::joy:

That’s why I’m so surprised!! For a “true supporter” he really is being negative. I’m sure the roaring atmosphere made up for that terrible defending though :joy:

He drifted in and out of the game and is pushed off the ball quite easily. He hasn’t got that position down to a fine art but there were some encouraging signs in flashes. His first touch is better than pretty much anyone else in the squad I’d say and as you mentioned he is a threat around the edge of the area.

I still think he is better off staying at Walsall than going on loan. As we collect suspensions and injuries as the season wears on he should be able to be an option from the bench.

Absolutely spot on was going to write a review this morning on how I saw match .I also went “didn’t stay in pub “ supping shinny .agree 100% with your points .was disappointed to ship 3 goals also the really slow start by our midfield again . McEntee Excellent for me played the Daniel role for us last night even some on the Brighton bench applauded on his man of match announcement.sub’s actually made us better last night for a change ( The Liam Gordons comment last night he didn’t look interested was ridiculous ) with Knowles in the team Matt looked better than I’ve seen him up to yet he’s definitely starved of right sort of ball .no Hutch last night so little creativity. although Mayer warmed to the task as the game went on .I look at last nights game at the fringe players and see who can fill those gaps in first team .Im still of the opinion we need 2 more quality signings

Mine too, one day we will get it right, might not be in time to stop us finishing mid table for a change, but at least currently we are being entertained for our hard earned sheckle or two. What really get’s my goat is certain poster/s telling us constantly how wonderful life was watching us under Flynn’s grindingly boring defence minded drudgery. Yes we may have been higher in the league and winning the occasional draw now and again, but the mind numbing boredom was endless and exhausting to endure.
Roll on the day when it all comes good, if I and many others amongst us live that long!

It wasn’t boring when we were winning from October to January. Far from it. I’d take that all day long if it got us out of this horrible division.

I’m not trying to rewrite history, the second half of last season as probably the most bored I have ever been following Walsall but for a time it looked like we were on our way up, can’t just dismiss that. I wanted Flynn out by the end but I do believe a lot conspired against him.

I see what you did there . You Kinky devil

Having seen the highlights, I am less distraught than I was. They scored one good goal and two very lucky goals. We scored two good goals. Mind you, our defensive record this season is very worrying: they got 3 from very few chances. And how we get only 2 from 19 attempts equally concerning. It does look as though if we can avoid some of these mistakes and improve our conversion rate, we’ve got a team here.
Glass half full?

Just watched the highlights and the overall game didn’t appear to be as bad as some made out, we gave as good as we got and created chances, attacking well - obviously only judging from the 10 mins.

First goal, if foulkes had / used his left foot for the clearance it may well have been a different outcome. The outside of the ‘wrong’ foot is always a bit riskier and can spin off, as it did.

For me the 2nd goal was the worse one to worry about as we look all on top of each other and foulkes out of position so we didn’t challenge the header and leaving the striker in acres of space to hit it.

3rd goal you see time and time again from a defender sliding in to block a cross and heads for the corner of the net. Can’t really blame Gordon for it, although that left channel was a bit easy to get down.

DJT really should have done better with that header from a lovely cross by Gordon.
I thought riley looked good in the middle of the pitch and maybe he’s an answer alongside stirk rather than mcentee when sadler wants to play that way.
Oteh looked lively and foulkes linked up well down the right at times. Jackson smith seemed confdent in goal which is good to see as vibes competition for owen.

Basically we need to tighten up when teams attack down our wings and cut out the individual mistakes. Good to see Knowles back which should give a confidence boost.

Totally agree remember watching my first match last season against Stevenage they scored in 98 minute to equalise, I went with intention of getting a season ticket came away shaking my head it was dire

Was there last night and was a really enjoyable game, good to see our academy lads given a chance.Really impressed with Thomas 15 mins ,can.t believe he is only 16 and really showed good skill and aggression.Interesting to note under Flynn we lost all 3 games in last years competition.

What a pity we didn’t sack Hatswell. and appoint Sadler as assistant coach to Flynn might have been the best of both worlds.Flynn’s defensive knowledge and Matt’s attacking flair
( “I do believe a lot conspired against him”) totally agree. DJ being the common factor for both of them .

As soon as I saw the rebound fall to them for the first goal, I knew they would score. It was happening all night for Brighton. We don’t seem to be getting any lucky bounces lately.
