L 4-2 vs Wrexham (A) - League Two, Tue 15th August, 7:45pm

I think the criticism will soon lead to groans when he misplaces a pass which could escalate
Hopefully a goal or a good game will quieten things down

A bit of a strange one with Hutchinson I think. He played almost every game last season and was one of our top contributors with goals and assists.

I think expectations are a bit high for him. One thing I like about him is he doesn’t hide when things aren’t going well and is still always looking for the ball and to try and make things happen.

For all the talk of our improved attacking play, there have been lots of times he has had the ball in good areas and there has been little or no movement for him, no one coming short, no one making runs. I noticed v Stockport that Gordon wasn’t exactly breaking his neck to go past him or even keep up with him (this could have been tactical, it’s not a knock at Gordon)

I think he will still be a big player for us this season. He can be frustrating but I don’t find him anywhere near as frustrating as Knowles for example who seems to run down blind alleys all the time and pick the wrong option almost every time. All about opinions I guess.

(Edit)

I haven’t heard any abuse towards him but the people sitting next to us v Stockport spent the whole second half saying “get him off” when I thought he was excellent.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

I thought Drapers movement and runs were good, the ball forward was way to slow at times.

I’m sure he can work on that.

I think it was the Morcambe game it was noticeable, especially first half. We are quite narrow if Gordon isn’t bombing down the side of him, even if it is just to take a defender and give an option. When Gordon does get down the side of him it looks a lot better.

I wouldn’t knock any player individually to be fair, the system still needs some work I think. The midfield isn’t quite right.

Agree, but in Hutchinson’s defence he was superb at holding ball and creating space.

It will happen and it will quieten down. An assist or a goal will be treated like Maradona. There will be I told you sos. Then the same 5-7 game cycle will happen, unless he improves.

He does need to improve and that’s fact, he plays for a very average league 2 team for a reason.

That shouldn’t be ignored.

People believe what they want to believe, and make assertions without evidence that support their beliefs.

At Wrexham the verbal abuse was loud and clear from where I was and not from just a few people either.
Drink had likely been taken by those people in large quantities though so nuanced criticism may have been beyond their capabilities at that time.

Can only comment on what I’ve heard. Heard much (MUCH) worse for other players.

That’s why I said ‘I think’

I tend to vary we’re I sit in The stadium sometimes return to a favourite area or stand I often chat people either side of me enjoy different views on players must say a good majority very knowledgeable and supportive of the team see little abuse .as for Hutch again the vast majority I sit by recognise what a good . Player and asset he his to us .I’m still working my round the stadium so perhaps I’ve got a bit of work to do on some of the doubters :wink:as for abuse on here Simon makes a very good point in his post .if someone wants to say a player was shit today .that’s perfectly ok .his way of expressing his opinion.repeating it over and over can get a little boring and monotonous though .

For all those that have hissy fits and knock this site, WFHYS is the Deep South of Walsall FC debate. Don’t even stop for petrol :joy:

They delete any content they don’t like, too. Just leave that group

Hutchinson won’t play well every week not many if any players do, but I’d rather have him than not have him that’s the bottom line surrounding the Hutchinson debate.

I’ve got a feeling it isn’t.

This is exactly right! We’ve had 6 seasons of losing; 3 wins in 27 games in 2023 - that is rubbish in anyone’s book. Many of us are just sick of losing (in Division 4 FFS) with no real sign of it improving any time soon. We follow the team in hope, rather than expectation. We need to put a winning run together, get some momentum and move up the table. We are becoming used to losing, and if we don’t correct that soon, then we will in a relegation battle this season.

We need a new right back and a central midfielder asap. The squad is too small and unbalanced: we have 3 “number 10s” (Hutch, Tierney and Maher) but only one experienced right-back and only 2 recognised centre-midfielders: Stirk and Comley, who is out for 2 months - I don’t include Riley as I’d class him as a right back - I don’t include McEntee, who is an U21 international centre back! As usual, we haven’t invested enough money in the important areas of the team and it shows!!

I’m pretty sure most of those on WFHYS go to most games home and away.

They probably just need to tone it down a bit :joy:

You go back to early 2011, the promotion party in May 2007 was still a reasonably recent memory and then settled into mid table in league 1 for a few seasons until the managerial appointments massively dropped in standard.

So feeling back then was generally show patience with Smith and could get back to that level within a few years and it happened.

Now mid table league 1 feels another planet although in fairness Stevenage are currently joint top with 3 wins out of 3 and they were heading for non league early 2022 when they sacked Tisdale so probably does show get in a decent manager, back him with signings and you can quickly rise.

Trouble is I expected all that with Flynn and it quickly fizzled out so that’s the issue when it doesn’t work with relatively proven manager, you go back to the young and very unproven profile.

Since relegation from championship in 2004 you’ve had 20 seasons and the club have finished in at least a play off place in whichever league it’s been in just 2 of them so that simply can’t be spun as anything else but underachievement.

If you play Hutchinson you just have to accept that he’s a bit powderpuff and wont offer much on the defensive side but hopefully his attacking play will make up for it.

I wouldnt mind trying Tierney in his position for a few games to see if its gives us more solidity. Its not as if we play through the midfield anyway. Our main attacking ploy is the diagonal ball from Daniels to the wingbacks which is proving a bit hit and miss.
