I mean we’re slating Liam Gordon’s delivery into the box, but come on we didn’t beat the first man on endless corners!

Let’s be consistent with our criticism folks.

Are these pages not for a bit of debate and a bit of backwards and forwards?

Or should we just agree that being top of the league means all our players are ace and any faults they have are cos it’s league two and what do you expect?

I’ve said before that we’re all amateurs and pretty clueless and that when it comes to the playing side, the management and players shouldn’t come anywhere near here.

So suggesting that Liam Gordon couldn’t cross his legs isn’t being disloyal, disrespectful or nasty it’s just what some people observe - along with all the great stuff he brings to the team. And in person, at the match I’m sure we all get right behind this brilliant team.

That’s the problem though. Most people don’t.

And I’m not sure anyone has said you’re not allowed to debate anything, but I think it’s fair to question why one of our best players constantly gets criticised, especially when it’s not consistent with how other players are viewed.

Because people have made a stance, so it doesn’t matter how well he plays most weeks “bUt He CaN’t CrOsS HiS lEgS!” Is easier to focus on than any other aspect that you might not have been correct on originally.

Best save I’ve seen live was Wacka’s triple against West Ham in the Cup. Something else that was :clap::clap::clap:

You’re right (of course)

As others have said every player we have has faults which is why they ply their trade at the bottom of their profession.

But to me a wing back struggling with crossing the ball is more important than a centre back who couldn’t trap a bag of cement (Williams if you’re wondering) or a midfielder who can’t head the ball (Lakin and Jellis). It’s akin to a forward who doesn’t score many goals (other Gordon) or a keeper that doesn’t make many saves (Simkin).

Some faults are absolutely integral to the role others which means they are more important.

Liams best attribute is carrying us up field and breaking lines to the point of having defensive units on pins and strings because they don’t know how to deal with it. He’s championship level at that, National League at crossing. And I think it’s ok to discuss both with equal measure.

You don’t need to be sarcastic and just say I’m right, when you patently disagree with what I’m saying. Isn’t this that grown up debate you wished for?

Except it’s not. He’s a wing BACK. Not a winger. That’s the difference. His main job is still defensive, which he’s still very very good at. His discipline is incredible for his position, his turnovers are extremely important too. I even noticed him digging Allen out of trouble against Fleetwood, covering for centre half. Then you add in that, yes (FFS) you can accept his delivery isn’t great, but his advancements up the pitch are. Put that on top of his defensive contributions and those are the key aspects of being a wing BACK.

And id say not being able to trap a bag of sand is pretty integral to any position on a football pitch, and exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about being ignored in others, while one fault is magnified to nausea in another, but I actually think that’s a pretty unfair comment on Williams (Okagbue though …).

But yes, yes I know he can’t cross.

To play the devil’s advocate, can anyone cross? Whenever I watch a game at any level, very few crosses find a member of the attacking team. Set plays are different because there is time to find a position.

I think, and the Gordon haters will love this, but it’s more to do with the quality of the ball, than the success rate. There’s no denying that he struggles to put the ball in good quality areas consistently. That’s the difference between a good crosser and a bad crosser.

The thing is I think he creates chances and attacking opportunities for us in different (and actually more effective) ways :man_shrugging:

He can cross though… Players have scored from his crosses this year! Wasn’t Matt’s looping header against MK Dons an excellent cross from him… there are many more.

He’s just up against excellent first men … league two is notorious for really good first manning in the RB position.

Maybe they should call it a “back wing” rather “wing back” so that the rest of us can reach the level of understanding you have around the primacy of the role.

Who is a “Gordon hater”. We need to shut any of that down.

As I said, I thought that was the adult debate you wanted, but clearly not. Sorry :+1:t3:

No I think I’ll maintain my stance, cheers

Like the excellence of RBs and RCBs of league two!

Come on now, this just makes the argument for his qualities look silly. He’s not just “up against great first men” and nobody is saying that he hasn’t literally crossed the ball to a player that has scored ever.

But you can still acknowledge a weakness in somebodies game, and appreciate that what they do bring to the game (far) surpasses that.

Well … some can.

No I know, just thought I’d add an absurd element for fans of Peter crouch podcast. It is true though…

I actually rate his crosses when they come off but his ability to cut inside and play a killer ball, or pick up a ball at pace and drive the team forward are upper league one quality… And he is upper league one quality but has struggled around lesser players IMO.

I can remember Wakka fetching a header out from under the bar against Brighton at home if memory serves me correct.

With that list of liabilities how on earth are we top of the league? I suppose the others must be even worse.

I’m surprised the opera glasses didn’t mist up.
