The Belt and Braces Approach

Scenario is the word I meant to use. Of all the madness you have posted the scenario of in form players being removed from the team just because of someone’s title and availability is the craziest thing you have ever posted.

There are numerous examples in football of captains being dropped

CompletelyCondescending strikes again.

Go on….and btw DD wasn’t dropped he was playing pretty well and through an injury.

Wouldn’t say DD isn’t having a good season. Think that’s a tad harsh. He has his moments like they all do at this level, but he’s usually mr consistent and let’s not forget how he started adopting this new advanced playmaker role before his injury! Seemed to be throwing a lot of teams off when he’d go on his marauding runs.

Now we have all 3 centre backs doing this and also not scared play positive forward passes regularly.

It’s all it deserves.

Also pointing out that the nature of a football forum is very much a “right here right now” outlook with little or no consideration to contradiction isn’t actually condescending….its just pointing out that it’s likely there’ll be some contradiction somewhere along the line.

There is a history of it you know

All I’ll say is that it’s refreshing, and brilliant, to be able to debate the merits of throwing someone who’s been our best player for the last 2 years back into the team or not - it shows how well we’re doing, rather than it being a given he’s back in because everyone else is wank.

I thought there was an interesting discussion about a big decision a young Manager like Sadler potentially might have to make. There is a scenario whereby we win our next two games, continue with our defensive shape and then Daniels is fit again.

Whilst I agree it’s more likely than not that Sadler would revert back to the experience, there would certainly be an argument for keeping faith with the guys who have propelled us into a play-off race.

Another interesting question is where exactly does he slot back into the back 3? Last year, a lot of his good work was in the centre, whilst this season he’s mostly been at LCB. Removing the natural balance that Allen has with his left foot would probably have an impact on how we build attacks, so you would imagine it will be Dave who has to make way, which is probably harsh on him.

For me, I’ve always felt like rcb would be a natural fit for Daniels given that he has played a lot of games an out and out right back, but Adeboyega simply looks a class above so it’s probably wise to make the most of him whilst he’s still around.

Don’t get me wrong, these are good headaches to be having, but headaches nonetheless…

What I meant by that is there is a history…especially at Walsall over the last few seasons to have players rushed back and on the bench before they’re ready….and I just know there’ll be a pile on of “look at DD been left on the bench even though the resident self proclaimed football genuis” said he wouldn’t be….

Just pre empting it :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

So… What’s everyone’s opinion of utilising rotation to keep the back line fit and fresh?

Of course. There is a discussion about it but the minute I say what I think will happen I get bombarded with accusations as though I have said that’s what I’d do……I’m just saying that’s what I think will happen and I’d totally understand and expect it.

Yeah there’s an argument. But there’s also an argument to suggest it’s not been the back three that have propelled us anywhere. They’ve been solid they’ve done well but they’ve also flown by the seat of their pants sometimes and let’s be honest the only decent side we’ve played is Mansfield and by rights they should’ve been out of sight and over the horizon by half time……id even go as far to say that Harrogate opened us up as often as any team we’ve played and were let down by their own inability to even hit the target.

It’ll be Allen. For now. And Allen’s done well. But he won’t be at all surprised or insulted when DD takes his place.

Of course. Plus there’s an argument that opposition managers will play in a way that exploits any weaknesses in our current line up.

Crazy to automatically insist on continuing to play the current starting 11 purely because they are on a winning run, albeit that’s something to obviously consider in terms of momentum.

DD is a great leader of that there’s no doubt, in fairness Jamma has been a good stand in during his absence.
If and when DD returns I’m sure Jamile will happily hand back the armband and normal service will be resumed.
We have players who through circumstances (injuries) have found themselves in the limelight and in fairness they have taken their chance and surprised many , myself included.
My concern is when players step up and do what they have done so far what kind of message is it sending out if no matter how good you play when injured players are fit you will be dropped. I’ve never pretended to be any kind of expert on football and I imagine MS will have to give returning players game time to build up their fitness plus of course it’s a team game and everyone will play a part but it would seem very harsh on an individual if they were playing well and found themselves back on the bench.
I don’t care who the player is you play because you have earned it not because you are the captain. It was only a few weeks ago we witnessed the Evans/Smith situation, something that I personally found rather unpleasant.

If you lose Allen you lose our corner taker who has done well as well as a good passer of the ball. I like DD a lot and hope he is fit soon but LCB is not his best position. Glad I am not the Manager !

Fair points, but I think this is a bit harsh. Morecambe are still very much in the play off race, Accrington were at the time we played them, Harrogate were just outside the top seven, and even Donny were one of the form teams in the division and are probably in a bit of a false position given the standard of their squad/Manager.

Looking ahead to next season, I think we’ll see Weir and Allen competing for lcb, Priestly through the middle, with Daniels on the right. Hopefully the free agent signing of Okagbue in the door providing cover along with Williams. It’s a good place to be!

I mean real decent. A title challenger. Everyone else, including us, is fighting it out for 7th to 16th….

Agree with everything you say. What sort of message to younger footballers playing well that once a senior pro returns you will be dropped. It’s bizarre

He’s done ok but only one goal has come from his set piece delivery, directly or indirectly.

I’m not sure his passing is better than DD either.

Let me ask this……

I think Allen has done well and I was a strong advocate for him being offered a new deal…I thought he did well earlier in the season when many didn’t and I liked what he did in midfield as a cameo….hes what every squad needs….a selfless team player prepared to do the job he’s asked to do whenever he’s called upon……

But……

Tell me one attribute he’s got that is clear and obviously stronger than what DD offers….apart from delivery of a left footed set piece…

It says “know your place….respect the senior pro….keep working hard…watch listen and learn……football is the toughest most horrible most ruthless business in the world….and one day if you do all those things you’ll be in the privileged position I’m in of having earned this respect”
