They can do whatever they like, serve up whatever ■■■■■ they like, assemble the worst squad ever, squeeze the club dry of every penny for decades, have zero ideas, zero plans and you still need to ‘get behind the lads’.
A loyal fan will do exactly what you say, the bigger picture is if you want more fans through the gate then you have to attract them with a successful team.
Well I don’t agree. The Council has not been that helpful and when we were in the championship with a side full of class players our home attendances were poor. If ever there was time in the last 50 years for people to support the Club that was it and they didn’t do it. The situation now is much worse because to get into the Championship you need plenty of luck, outstanding management and plenty of finance. To stay there you need gates of over 10,000 so if we got there the stadium would have to full every week!! Past experience tells us it won’t happen.
My hope is for a team that can play decent football, score goals and get us into the Division above and hopefully stay there but the way the game has changed that will take some doing.
It should also be remembered that both Southend and Grimsby need at least 3 wins to overtake us not just 1. Which is unlikely since they’ve both got 1 win in their last 10. Most of their games have been draws… like us.
I agree that in recent years the “Bonser saga” has had an impact as the rent has climbed and climbed. It wasn’t so much of an issue in the early 2000s. Where we can agree is that that issue needs sorting one way or another .I also agree it is possible to build interest but I am not too sure how high that can get.
I know it’s a looooong time ago but in 94-95 we won promotion and had a team playing very attractive football. In the summer our ticket prices went up by the biggest percentage increase in the entire League, apart from Middlesbrough who had just reached the Premier League and were signing glamorous foreigners by the boat load. It seemed a bit of a kick in the teeth, and only a few months after the Leeds ticket price P.R. own goal.
That’s just one indication of the disconnect Whalley and Bonser fostered with supporters. They never seemed interested in having a good relationship, and we continue to pay the price for their mismanagement.
But I seem to recall didn’t put up the prices when in the Championship when they could have done.Others with better memories may wish to comment but I seem to remember some criticism at the time that prices should have been increased to fund better players.
Our ticket price on match day have always been ridiculous for adults. £21.50 most games on match day isn’t gonna attract a floating fan. Albion, villa and blues do cheaper tickets than that on match day. For me it should be £5 for kids and £10 for adults and see how it goes. If we can sell double surely that would be better than an empty stadium and we’d sell more of our famous pork scratching. Who know we might even push the boat out and get chips
