W 1-0 vs Colchester United (H) - League Two - Sat 2nd Sept, 3pm

We’ve won 3 of our last 31 matches. Every game at this point is must win, particularly at home to a team below us in the table.

They’re a high quality side they showed that in their handsome romp at Gillingham on Saturday and were incredibly unlucky to lose at home to MK Dons previously. We will have to be at it and on our game to win this one, but I think we will.

And their three other defeats in their three other games before the loss against MK Dons?

Its Colchester - we’ve got this

They’ve only lost 2 other league games, an odd goal defeat at Bradford and there only really disappointing result and performance losing to a James Tilley inspired AFC Wimbledon at home.

Yep. They’ve played 3 of the top 5 plus Bradford away. A tough start. We should be trying to win this but it’s not going to be easy.

That is a very worrying statistic indeed.

In 88-89 having made a reasonable start we then won three games out of thirty-seven, and finished bottom. I’m not sure if that is our worst ever run, we were possibly as bad at times in our re-election years.
This has been terrible though, I’m staggered at how patient the fanbase has been.
The 88-89 shambles was in the second division so we were playing the likes of Man City, Chelsea, Leeds, Blues, Dipswich etc.

It’s absolute madness.

It’s not like we have been a team way out of our depth, we must have had to work hard to make a stat like that happen.

I know most of them were last season but still a real reminder that our football league status is very fragile all the time we are in this division.

I went to every game that season. I was young and stupid (now I am old and stupid!)

We were way out of our depth that season. Only won 5 games. More understandable, we weren’t much better the following season to be fair.

I don’t feel our team has been out of its depth, it really is a ridiculous stat that should never have happened. Thank god for that good run we had between October and January last season.

This is staggering.

If we don’t make it 4 in 32 we could be staring down the barrel of a tougher season than any of us envisaged when Mr Boycott released his love letter.

I think we will nick this - because we have to. A nervy win.

Good news. Last seasons results wont affect our place in the league table this season.

So far at home this year we are W1 D1 L0 in L2.

Lets hope we win on Saturday, but more importantly play well, because ultimately that will benefit us more in the long run than a nervy win.

I think you are right, we haven’t had many hammerings and there have been plenty of draws, which allows the “fine margins” defence to be used.
I looked because it is such a terrible run and I wondered if there had been a worse one. I looked first at the calendar year of 1982 because we were top in January and 23rd or 24th by Xmas, but we won five games in a similar period. Then I looked at 88-90. I only counted league games, if I had included the cups it would have been three wins in over 40 matches. :astonished: Happy days. But, as I said, that was against Chelsea and the like.

I think that sometimes a terrible run can be enjoyable, in that dark, twisted way Walsall fans and other lower division fans have. But the current one has been boring more than anything else, and the black humour which helped sustain us in the late 80s and early 90s hasn’t really developed.

Anyway, I stopped looking after 88-89, so I don’t know if we have had worse than that.

No, but a continuation of last season’s losing mentality will. There are no signs yet that, despite being “more entertaining”, the losing mentality (which WFC seem to be specialists at) has been eradicated.

Other than one 3 game run v Crewe, Harrogate (which saw Flynn sacked) and Salford we haven’t lost more than 1 game on the trot.

The negativity is just ridiculous. Try and enjoy watching us play :bulb:

I was listening back to the BBC’s EFL show squad goals on iPlayer last weekend and they have a former player on there called Calvin Andrew.

He said he saw our Crewe and Wrexham games and didnt like the way some of our players reacted after conceding. When pressed he said a bit of back and forth is fine, but what he saw was players proper digging each other out. He said it looks like Matt Sadler has a big job on his hands gelling this side.

Again, total conjecture and just the opinion of a former player, but after 2019 we all know how damaging a toxic atmosphere can be. Especially worrying when we are always on the lookout for these ‘good characters’

I think unity is almost as important as ability. Especially at this level. Will be interesting to monitor

Need a win and an entertaining one at that, get some atmosphere going at what’s been a deathly silent bescot stadium so far this season

Unity is massive but not suprised at the frustrations going over the edge because of the nature of the goals conceded and due to the run of results in 2023 of which a decent chunk of the players have played in most of.
Need togetherness but we showed last week that after going behind and needing to chase the game we survived a 10 minute onslaught but composed ourselves and hot back in it. Hopefully a good sign.
Also old enough to remember Forbes grabbing Dornan round the throat which seemed to do them and the team no long term harm!
